The reason coleus is unforgiving is anatomical. The stems are succulent-adjacent, meaning they store more water than a typical herbaceous plant but lack the thick, waxy cuticle that protects drought-tolerant species. The leaves are thin and broad, designed for a humid understory environment where water is abundant but light is limited.
